Glenna Bertsch, Kidney Transplant Recipient

In my early 20’s, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease. PKD is a genetic disorder that causes numerous cysts in the kidneys. These cysts result in loss of kidney function and end in kidney failure.  The disease progresses slowly, so I had a lot of time to “not” think about where I would ultimately find myself:  in need of a kidney transplant. In what I can only call a true miracle, I received that life-changing gift in September 2008. Through the amazing grace of a family in their toughest hour, I have been given the incredible gift of a normal life. The power of that family’s compassion during such a difficult time is something that will never leave me. I declare my donor a superhero and hold my donor’s family close to my heart every day. I am grateful that my life is wonderfully normal because of their superhuman strength!

With three siblings who also have PKD, my family understands how personal it is to make the decision to become an organ and tissue donor. The best way to start this journey is to educate yourself. Get the facts about what organ and tissue donation is and what it can do for those waiting on the transplant list.

There is no greater power than the power to safe a life – Life.  Pass it on!
