Dolores “Dee” Remington, Liver Transplant Recipient

In 2011, I was placed on the liver transplant waiting list after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver caused by Hepatitis-C. As the Hepatitis-C and cirrhosis progressed, a malignant liver tumor began to develop. Needless to say, my change in status increased the urgency of a transplant considerably.

My health was rapidly declining, while my quality of life continued to erode with it.  About five weeks went by, and around 1:00 in the morning, I received a phone call I was desperately waiting for. I was informed that a liver was available and that I needed to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. A day later, I had a healthy liver and a new lease on life. While recovering in the hospital, my son’s wedding took place. My husband and son set up a video link and the wedding was streamed to a laptop in my room. Still recovering from surgery, I can’t say I remember the wedding that clearly, but the nurses were able to fill me in.

My grandson is now six years old, and it’s a wonderful blessing to see him grow up and for me to be part of our family gatherings still. My husband and I love to travel and camping, and this year, we have been able to take several vacations in our RV, something I would not have been able to do without this transplant. Every day I thank God for His Grace, my good fortune, and for the generosity and kindness of my donor. Because of the selfless act of generosity by an anonymous hero, I and several other people have been given a second chance and the truly wonderful gift of life.
