Blake Adkins, Organ, Tissue, & Cornea Donor

My son, Blake, was a bright light for our family, his son and to everyone he encountered. He was sensitive and creative, sharing his gifts through his music, writing, and leadership abilities. Few people knew of the selfless and brave choice he made upon receiving his driver’s license to register as an organ and tissue donor. I was not surprised by this as it was so true to his giving and caring nature. While at first it was a heart-wrenching decision to carry out his wishes as I was still reeling from the loss of my son, I came to be comforted by his choice to be a hero and think of others in need.

On Valentine’s Day, 2014, Blake was able to answer many other peoples’ prayers by being an organ and tissue donor. While our family was grieving such a great loss, there was a ray of hope for others. Those people who were waiting received the miracle they so desperately needed. I have since met with some of the recipients who received transplants because of Blake’s gift. Meeting the heart recipient and hearing my son’s heart beating on through a young woman who wouldn’t be alive otherwise has helped me in my healing process and has shown me that Blake lives on in them.
